Emergency Procedures

Emergency Preparedness
  1. Know your building's evacuation plan.
  2. When working with flammable or other hazardous materials, have the appropriate spill cleanup supplies ready.
  3. Have a battery operated radio.
  4. Discuss preparedness plans with your co-workers.
  5. Call Environmental Health & Safety for fire extinguisher training.
Building Evacuation
  1. When the fire alarm is activated, evacuation is mandatory, even if you don't smell smoke.
  2. Do NOT use elevators!
  3. Take personal belongings such as keys, purses, etc.
  4. Notify your supervisor and/or emergency personnel present.
  5. Assist persons with disabilities.
Weather Emergency
  1. For up-to-date weather information:
    • Monitor local radio and TV stations.
    • Listen for the campus emergency siren and its messages and instructions.
  2. Be prepared to take shelter in place until otherwise notified by emergency personnel present.
  3. During thunderstorms, do NOT handle electrified equipment.
  4. During tornadoes or strong straight-line winds:
    • Seek shelter in an interior hallway or a lower floor.
    • Get under sturdy furniture if available.
    • Listen for the campus emergency siren and its messages and instructions.
  5. Assist persons with disabilities.

Most buildings on campus have been assessed by the National Weather Service. Each floor of the building has a floor plan with included evacuation routes and shelter locations. Persons should familiarize themselves with those signs and consult when taking the necessary precautions outlined above.

Fire
  1. Help remove those needing assistance in the immediate area.
  2. Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station and call 911.
  3. Confine the fire by closing windows and doors.
  4. Extinguish the fire if you have been trained and it is safe to do so.
  5. Evacuate the building.
  6. Do not enter the building until authorized by emergency personnel.
Bomb Threat
  1. Remain calm.
  2. Get as much information as possible from the threatening caller, such as location of the device, when the device was planted, etc.
  3. Call 911.
  4. Follow instructions of emergency personnel present.

Suspicious Object or Package
  1. Do NOT touch or disturb the object or package.
  2. Call 911.
  3. Notify your supervisor and/or emergency personnel present.
Suspicious Person
  1. Do not physically confront the person(s).
  2. Do not let anyone into a locked building, office, or other space.
  3. Do not block the person(s) access to an exit.
  4. Call 911 and provide as much information as possible about the person(s) and their direction of travel.
