Protecting students is a full-time concern on campus, with many programs in place, new ones being developed. Students who come to the University of Arkansas, and their families, have the right to expect a campus environment at least as safe as their homes, and in many cases, safer. The university puts significant time, money, equipment and people into meeting that expectation.
Campus safety is an ongoing concern: 24/7, 365 days a year. We are dedicated to preventing incidents from happening. We have policies, procedures and programs in place designed to protect students, and to teach them ways to protect themselves. Four university divisions are directly involved in making the campus a safe place.
What to Do in Case of an Emergency
Stay Calm
Most of us live our lives without ever having to deal with major calamities. Unfortunately, this can often leave us unprepared for times they do occur. Even minor events can quickly turn into catastrophes simply due to panic. The first thing to do in an emergency situation is to remain calm and clear-headed. Remember any emergency training you have received, such as staying away from windows during a tornado or avoiding elevators when exiting during a fire.
Stay Alert
Thanks to new technology and programs here at the University, in conjunction with the BlackBoard Connect-ED service, we are able to send messages to students, faculty and staff quickly and efficiently. Anyone in the campus community can opt to receive emergency notifications via voicemail, text messaging, email, or TTY/TTD service.
